Members' League
Description
League points are calculated at all weekend College Sport Wellington (CSW) and Orienteer of the Year (OY) events run by Orienteering Wellington, Hutt Valley or Red Kiwi. Points are calculated using km rates and a handicap system based on ‘age and gender factors’, which have been empirically determined.
Rules
- Competitors must be financial members of Orienteering Wellington in the league year in order to qualify for points
- Allocated for hard navigation (red) courses only, and only applies to members 16 years and up so it is not confused with CSW.
- For all events the age class used is the true age-based class for the individual competitor and not the age class of the course entered. For example, a 61-year old runner entering a M21 class will have the M60 age factor applied, not the M21 factor.
- No points are awarded to competitors who mispunch or retire
Calculation
Points are calculated using a ‘handicap’ system, which takes the competitor’s overall km-rate and calculates an adjusted ‘minutes per km’ rate based on age and gender. The 25 fastest adjusted km rates across all red-level courses in an event will be awarded points, with the fastest getting 25 points and the 25th fastest 1 point.
Calculation of adjusted km rate is based on the following formula:
Adjusted km rate = (Course time taken / Course distance) * ‘age factor’.
The latest revision of ‘age factors’ was done by Orienteering Tasmania at the beginning of the 2000 season. They also closely match the British Orienteering ‘course length ratios’. They are:
| Age Class (Female) | Factor | Age Class (Male) | Factor |
|---|---|---|---|
| W16 | 0.65 | M16 | 0.85 |
| W18 | 0.70 | M18 | 0.90 |
| W20 | 0.75 | M20 | 0.95 |
| W21 | 0.81 | M21 | 1.00 |
| W35 | 0.77 | M35 | 0.98 |
| W40 | 0.73 | M40 | 0.94 |
| W45 | 0.68 | M45 | 0.89 |
| W50 | 0.63 | M50 | 0.83 |
| W55 | 0.58 | M55 | 0.77 |
| W60 | 0.53 | M60 | 0.70 |
| W65 | 0.48 | M65 | 0.63 |
| W70 | 0.43 | M70 | 0.56 |
| W75 | 0.38 | M75 | 0.49 |
| W80+ | 0.33 | M80+ | 0.42 |
The points for each individual orienteer are calculated on their best X out of Y counting events, where Y is the total number of such events in that year, and where X is decided by the Orienteering Wellington Committee (e.g. best 10 out of 14). It is usually 60% of counting events, rounded down.
